The call for duty and my job

Someone may want to ask, is this blog about politics or technology? Well, am a technologist and by the virtue of what my country is going through now, we’ve got to take our country back from the cabals. I believe the call is a call to duty, to save our country, to speak for the voiceless, to jointly chart the course for the unborn, to take Nigeria to its glory.

I strongly believe that if I don’t support the movement, I have lost my heart and failed my generation. The state of our country is as a result of some people who refused to act, to talk when it was needed most! Somehow we cast blame on them, but you know, the blames will not solve problems. So we gotta work!

We’ve rolled our sleeves, to participate in the enlightenment of our fellow countrymen, to influence the government as much as we could because our future and the future of millions depends on it. If we don’t, our children will blame us for what we are blaming others for!

I still write daily on web trends in the country, around the continent and the globe here.

Nigeria Call Obey

My fellow Nigerians, it is my pleasure to communicate through this medium; to share with you our common pain, agony, hopes, dreams and the possibilities of us as a Nation which are being defined by current events. I believe you are thinking (as I am also thinking); why Nigeria? Why do we have bad “rulers “? Why are we labeled a terrorist state? Why do we have a sick and absent president? Why is our economy in shamble? Why is our infrastructure in decadence? Why are our youths in despair? Why do we have more poor people than we do the rich? Why, why, why? I’ve spoken with people about hope, but what I get in response is, why, why, why and sometimes, people just conclude that the future is bleak and no light at the end of the tunnel! What a country!

Less I forget; I think I should appreciate the power of “Naija” in us, the bound that still hold us together despite our differences, the believe on the minds of my Aboki friend that sells candy by my house, that “ibo boy” who repairs my laptop in computer village and the voice of Iya Sikira of the popular “bukataria” named Olaoluwa food canteen that Nigeria go “beta”. I also appreciate my Niger Delta friend “Osare” that said “this Nigeria must work“!

We all could have taken to the street with our machetes, killing and spilling our blood in the name of making the country better! I also appreciate my learned friends who give us hope that the future is bright while not just saying it but indeed working towards it. The leadership of our dear professors, the pastors, the Alfas and the human right activist that always remind us that killing ourselves really is not the solution but rising to our civic responsibilities, raising our voices in the matter of national interest, and also being diligence at what we do is all we need to get there!

Machination of the Cabals

Nigeria is currently at the deciding point where our future has to be defined, where our true test as a nation is takes place. What we are facing today is as a result of plans and machination of people in and outside the country, to take hold of the future of this country; people who thrives in chaos! Though in their minds they are doing the “right thing”, but I want to reaffirm that any decision that takes advantage of the common people, that deprive people of their dreams and rights, that fails to do what they have sworn to or in a position to do what is right and value adding to the people is anti-people, anti-progress and short-sighted.

Let’s look at it; in 2007 a sickly person was imposed on Nigeria; down the line Nigeria’s slightly growing economy started dwindling, time to deliberate and take decision are spent in intensive care unit of a hospital far away from our country! I do believe our president is human and it could have happened to anyone, but we must demonstrate our patriotism by serving with the best of our ability and if our ability is not enough or could impede the progress of the country we should give others chance to carry on! This I believe will make us have peace in our mind and soul!

There is panic, fear and uncertainty across the country; this is an opportunity for the “Cabals” to bring this country down. Any friction in Aso rock will ignite the “expected” crisis that will send this country back 50 years! This is there plan and we must not fall prey to their empty stomached crocodile.

Defining Moment

The moment has come to let Nigerians chart the course, to know who truly have their interest at heart, those who truly want to serve and those who are only interested in their pockets and power! Our defining moment has just arrived 11 years late, after the current democracy. But all the same, the last 10 years was used to develop prototypes of what our democracy should be like, of the future and legacy we want to give the coming generation. Our democracy can work, but not on selfish values, not on “Visionless” Leadership and youths in despair and hunger! As we await and guide this nation through the challenges, we must be prepared for the coming elections, that I think is our hope to define our future.

Reading through the presentation of Martin Jacques, at the last LSE public lecture “When China Rules The World”; China definitely is on course to rule the world! I discovered some underlying factors which are vision, decisiveness and commitment to build the Nation: vision based on proper analysis and genuine interest reached at a decisive point and fired on with commitment. We cannot afford to watch our God-given potentials (natural and human resources) go down the drain. We cannot  wish our way to greatness, we must work at it. There is nothing as void as wishful thinking, the earlier we take a stand the better else we will be officially labeled Banana Republic!

Creating the future

During tough times decisions are made, those who are keen on taking the lead in the future have started 20-30 years ago, but it is not too late! We have got to rekindle our vision; we have got to get hold of our “Noble Course” as read in the second stanza of our national anthem. We must go back to the basics which we all recite at our early ages. “… in love and honesty to grow, and live in just and truth…” so as to attain the great and lofty height we set our eyes on!

To get thee, we have to work hard as individuals and as a nation. We have got to respect and love one another. To strive for excellence in whatever we do, to leverage on our strength and help with our weaknesses. To believe that our population, diversity and differences are tools we need to stand and shoulder-to-shoulder in the committee of nations. To become the giving nation and not the beggar or perpetual receiver of aids. This is Nigeria’s call to which we all must obey!

Google is the phenomenon of the web no doubt, but apple is sure a model and a veteran when it comes to consistent innovation and business success.

Apple held its IPO in 1980 while Google’s was just 2004 by my calculation that’s about 24 years after. Today Google’s markep capitalization exceeds that of Apple and they both are head to head in the battle to gain control of the mobile web. Google currently worth $199.97 Billion while Apple is $192.9.

The way technology is shaping things, I believe the business growth will continue to break records. Though saturation level is fast approaching in developed market but in the emerging market, massive growth will contiue at least for next 10 years.

Key to growth
- Research
- Innovation
- Sustainable business model
- Cutting edge technology
- Sound Management

I read through Google Q3 Financial report last year, I saw the picture of sound leadership as they continue to remain profitable despite the recession. Apple on the other hand resusitated after the recall of the founder Steve Job. Since then they have innovated disruptive technology that changed our world, the iPod, iPhone and coming Table.

Google’s CEO Eric Schmidt recently resigned his appointment on Apple’s board. Google this Tuesday launched its phone the Nexus One. The battle is shifting from Microsoft to Apple this time and I want to see how they will triumph and set new standard: You can be big, and still profitable!

What does this mean for African Technopreneurs? Simple, Innovate now!

Note: I talk more on web technology business in my upcoming book “Web Business Models”

On Being Effective

Efficiency they say is doing things right while Effectiveness is doing the right thing. Being effective means that you don’t just know what you are doing but knows why you are doing it.

I came across Steven R. Covey’s 7 Habit of highly effective people couple of years back; like I’ve always done, I make note on each book I read then apply the principles learned in it to my life. It indeed impacted my life positively!

Over the years I realized that technology and hyper-connection sometimes makes us ineffective. We are always on and want to know what’s on your friends’ mind 24/7. Facebook, Twitter and other social media stuff. You know, being too deep in these tools steal our time. I’m a Facebook addict no doubt. But since late last year I’ve tried to reduce my time on it, so as to do the things that matters.  It’s trivial as an analyst to stay off the tools but I realized the more time I take to look at the tools from outside the better I understand the dynamics and how it impacts on individual and corporate firms.

The tools are here to stay, but you know, you can’t be among the crowd and stand out if you are unable to manage it.

Effectiveness I think still goes beyond avoiding technologies, it involves managing ones life, filtering what matter from “non-matter”. The world is moving fast, we need to move faster than the world if we want to be highly competitive in the market place. So, you can’t drag along and lead, you go ahead.

I have revisited the book and am back to reread it to balance my life as I get involve with more responsibilities.

If you have the book or a similar one why no read it once more!

Check out this link.

Has technology effected your effectiveness?

Life is a matter of Choice not Chance

First off I have uploaded the Analysis of Top websites in Nigerian for 2009 on webtrendsng.com here.

So let me gist you about something I’ve been thinking since yesterday.

I have often heard about the above phrase and I tried to look into my own life to see if above truly works. In the short time I’ve lived on earth I can testify to the fact that it works.

When I was younger, I could remember how I dreamt and as I grew, it influenced the decisions I took, today some of the dreams have become reality. Then I thought to myself, what if I have dreamed bigger? What if I didn’t stop doing those things that lit the fire? What if I could just turn back the hands of time to make it excellently the way I now see it?

I personally will say that vision is the ultimate because it shows you the picture of a brighter future and sets you on fire to get going no matter what. So the vision you have will make you dream and the dreams you dream will eventually become your reality.

Chance on the other hand is to hope that thing will get better and not doing anything to make it be. You could feel depressed, forgotten or unwanted. Remember nobody will want you until you want yourself. One of the mistake our people in this part of the world make with word they say is “e go better” (meaning it shall be well soon) but not doing anything. You’ve got to do something no matter how smal, you’ve to grow each day.

To get there from here requires choices not chances, you decide that you want to become great and work towards it!

I have resolved to always dream and run with my vision. I believe as we start this 2010 you will also start to dream and together we can have a fulfilling year.

Just think about something that drive you nut, something you are passionate about and think deeply about it, write it on a paper and run with it immediately. You don’t have to have all the answer before you get start. Just start…  you will get better as you go on. God says He will bless the work of your hand not the worries of your mind!

Choices indeed set you apart from the pack! Make the right choice today!

2010 here at last; my dreams for this year

A much awaited year, packed with event s has eventually landed. First, you know, we need to thank God for the great opportunity to make down to 2010. I want to believe you have got your plans in place and ready to blast full force!

What to expect

As a technologist in, it gives me joy to be among the young Nigerian that will be at the Technology Outlook 2010 in February to discuss web 2.0. With this opportunity, we hope to take the web to the mainstream.

One of the things I have noticed so far is the importance of manpower towards building a competitive industry in this country; I will be doing more training on PHP and I hope to train as many young people as possible. I’ve also been scheduled for various executive training through the year.

Am also going to be working extremely hard on my book; Web business models. I hope to share with people how to understand and build a successful web business. Looking at what made the top guns what they are today and how to stay afloat in the competitive web market. Remember the book is not about “Get Rich Quick” book!

Personal development

I believe in the importance of reading to the mind, body and soul! I want to learn big time this year as fast as possible. More responsibility is lying on my shoulder, and you know, you can’t give what you don’t have. I want to learn more from these topics; Team building, Collaboration, Leadership, Sales, Project Management, Negotiation and Analytical thinking.

I have revisited one of the books that has have impact on my like; 7 Habits of highly effective people, by Steve R. Cover. As I start this year, I think one needs guide that can fire you up as you go along.

Sport

South Africa 2010 world cup is the first on African soil and fortunately we made it. I want to follow the match “Bumper-to-bumper”. Remember also that Nigeria will be at Angola this year… So let’s give them all the support we can, the boys need to bring the cup home!

I will be launching a site possibly before the end of March; footballsense.com. Am a football fan and I enjoys every bit of it. If there was no computer, I would have become a professional footballer :( !

Hope you have your plans knitted? Express it and run with it!

Last Day of 2009; Taking stocks and thanking God

Today marks the 365th days in the year 2009 hence the final day! This I think is the time to reflect, review and refocus for the plan ahead.

2009 was the toughest of all years for me, managing business and corporate assignment. Many decisions came and expected my judgment; well I had to because it is a must and a definitive one.

The economic crunch across the globe and political drama in Nigeria, it’s really a year to remember; Barack Obama, Michael Jackson, Bernie Maddof, Launching of Webtrendsng.com and greenlagos.com and many more technology development in Nigeria.

Looking back at 2009, I thank God for all He has taken me through, while learning along the way and growing, I believe it is through God’s grace that am able to see today.

It’s a day to cherish and look forward to a fruitful new year.

You are welcome along as we go on this journey together, take a seat, fasten your seat belt and let’s go 2010!
